If you are looking for a place for your son or daughter to learn to live independently, then ICRE-Roosevelt is for you! ICRE-R provides a safe, supportive, and accessible environment that allows your child to learn and apply new skills leading to his/her own highest level of independence. ICRE-R’s professional staff will work with your child to assess and develop his/her abilities and seek out ways to overcome the physical limitations of his/her disability. The goal of ICRE-R’s program is for your child to be prepared to move into an independent living environment that meets his/her needs, while still allowing him/her to maintain his/her maximum level of independent skills.

During your child’s stay at ICRE-R, he/she will be placed in specialized classes, which utilize the Life Centered Career Education (LCCE) curriculum to build his/her independent living skills. These skills will then be applied and reinforced in the living environment where your child resides within ICRE-R. As your child develops new skills and abilities, he/she will move into living environments that provide for more independence and responsibility. In addition, your child will have access to residential care services (to assist with Activities of Daily Living), medical and nursing services, and various therapy services, including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Communication Therapy, Recreation Therapy, and Social Services. Your child will be assigned a caseworker that will monitor your child’s progress and help coordinate the team that provides services for your child. The caseworker stays in contact with you to keep you informed of your child’s progress, and provides a channel for you to provide input regarding your child’s program. The caseworker may also assist you with obtaining certain government benefits/entitlements for your child.

ICRE-R is NOT a nursing home or long-term care facility, but rather a school and rehabilitation center. As such, ICRE-R follows a traditional school year schedule, with two semesters during the normal school year and a summer session. ICRE-R closes for regular school breaks and some long weekends. During these periods, your child will not be able to stay at ICRE-R.

Of course, with any program, there are certain responsibilities/expectations. Some of the expectations at ICRE-R include:

  • As mentioned above, ICRE-R has certain periods throughout the year during which the facility is closed. Parents are expected to take their child home during these periods. If you are not able to take your child home, you will need to provide alternative residential placement during these periods.
  • Although ICRE-R promotes independence for your child, we do not want to lose the family connection. Therefore, parents are expected to take their child home every other weekend, in addition to regular breaks.
  • In maintaining parental involvement, parents are encouraged to accompany their child to and from medical appointments, whenever possible.
  • Parents are required to attend certain meetings regarding their child’s program, including their child’s scheduled IEP, Service Plan, and Case Management Meetings.
  • Although there is no cost to participate in ICRE-R’s program, students do need spending money to participate in activities and for certain levels of the transition program involving money management. Therefore parents are expected to provide spending money for their child by depositing $50.00 or more in his/her child’s ICRE-R trust account every month. This account is used for weekly allowances, special activities, and any special needs your child may have. Your child can access their account with authorization from their caseworker. You may communicate with your child’s caseworker if you have any concerns regarding your child’s spending.
  • ICRE-R will be providing and/or coordinating certain aspects of your child’s medical needs and may be ordering and/or maintaining durable medical equipment for your child. Therefore, ICRE-R will need current and up-to-date medical insurance information on a regular basis. If your child has Medicaid coverage, this will mean providing a copy of the Medicaid card each month.

ICRE-R looks forward to meeting you and your child. Please see the Admissions page to request more information or to apply.
